01 / GUIDE
Print a system test from Print Center
These steps apply to the Print Center interface documented in Apple’s current Mac guide. Menu availability can differ on older macOS versions.
- Open Finder → Applications → Utilities → Print Center.
- Select the intended printer in the sidebar.
- In the menu bar, choose Printer → Print Test Page.
- Check the queue if no sheet arrives. Resolve an offline alert or paused job before sending more copies.

Print a test PDF using Preview
A sample PDF is useful when you want the same visible content for several comparisons. Download it from one of the tests linked here.
- Choose A4 or US Letter on the test page and download the matching PDF.
- Open the PDF in Preview and choose File → Print.
- Select your physical printer, then match Paper Size to the PDF and loaded paper.
- For scale or margin checks, set Scale to 100% rather than Scale to Fit. Print one copy.
Choosing the PDF menu saves a file; selecting your printer and pressing Print sends the job to the printer.

If your printer does not print
Check that you selected the intended printer rather than a saved file destination. In Print Center, inspect the queue and resume a paused job when the printer is ready. If the printer is offline or missing, check its connection and follow Apple’s printer troubleshooting guide.
If a test prints from Print Center but not from a particular app, try a different document and check that app’s print settings.

If the page prints but looks wrong
Use the color test for visible color coverage, the text test for fine strokes, or the margin test for cropping and size. Keep the same paper and quality settings when comparing two sheets.
A Mac system test and a sample PDF do not replace an Epson nozzle check or HP diagnostic report. Follow your printer model’s instructions for device maintenance.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
What if I cannot find Print Test Page?
Check that you are in Print Center and have selected a printer. If your macOS version has a different interface, use the PDF method here or the user guide for that macOS version.
Can I use Command-P in the browser?
Yes, but it may print the whole webpage. Use the Print button in our test tool to print its test sheet, or download the PDF and print it in Preview.
Why is my margin test smaller than expected?
A Scale to Fit option can resize the PDF. Use the matching paper size and 100% scale, then measure the reference marks on the printed sheet.
