How to Print an HP Printer Test Page

Choose a computer test, a printer self-test, or a print quality report. Each answers a different question about your HP printer.

Device examples: HP DeskJet 2700, 4100 & 4800 series

01 / GUIDE

Choose the report you need

A Windows or Mac test checks the path from your computer to the printer. A device self-test checks output without a browser document. A Print Quality Diagnostic page provides patterns for investigating quality issues.

The device instructions here apply to DeskJet 2700, 4100, and 4800 series. Check HP support for other DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet, or LaserJet models.

02 / GUIDE

Print a DeskJet self-test page

For the supported series above, use the physical printer controls.

  1. Load paper into the input tray and turn on the printer.
  2. Keep the Power button held down while pressing Cancel.
  3. Let go of Cancel first, then let go of Power. Wait for the test sheet.

Print a quality diagnostic report

For these DeskJet series, HP also documents a report available through the HP app.

  1. Put plain white paper in the tray.
  2. In the HP app, select your printer image to access its settings.
  3. Find Diagnostics or Tools. Open Print quality tools or Printer Reports, then choose Print quality report.

Menu labels depend on the app and printer. If the report option is absent, use the support page for your exact model instead of trying another model’s button sequence.

Compare the results

If the device self-test works but a computer test does not, investigate the selected printer, connection, or queue. If both print with visible defects, use your model’s print-quality instructions. Our color and black-and-white sheets provide repeatable samples for comparison.

A color block that looks faint does not prove a particular cartridge is faulty. The printer and driver control how document colors are rendered.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Is an HP information page the same as a quality test?

No. Information and status reports describe the printer or connection. Choose a Print Quality Diagnostic report when you need the model’s quality patterns.

Do I need the HP app to print a sample PDF?

Not if your computer already has a working printing connection. You can print our sample through a browser or PDF viewer. The app is used for the diagnostic-report procedure described above.

Is PrintPageCheck an HP service?

No. This is an independent guide with links to HP’s instructions. Our printable samples are general test documents, not official HP diagnostic reports.
